2008-9 Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund Funding Assessment and Consultancy Refugees and Asylum Seekers have been part of the Fund's thematic criteria since the first UK grants round of 1999. Awards have been made to a variety of organisations from large national bodies to smaller local refugee organisations. The Fund is proud to have been one of the first independent grant makers to offer funding specifically for young refugees and asylum seekers. Transparency Research has been working with the Fund since 2007 in planning and delivery of the open round of funding for the Refugee and Asylum Seekers Initiative.

2008-9 United States Institute of Peace Socio-economic survey in Bukavu and Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo Working with Bureau d'Etudes, de Recherches et de Consulting International, this project involved travelling through seven countries by commercial plane, cargo plane, boat and jeep, working in three languages and completing 500 questionnaires in two locations. The research is a baseline survey for the role of businesses in peace building in these two important Democractic Republic of Congo cities. We have made the DRC survey data available, in addition to the socio-economic report on Bukavu and Lubumbashi
Funded directly by US Congress.
2007-8 Home Office Evaluation of the Voluntary Assisted Return and Reintegration Programme (VARRP) Voluntary Assisted Return is the process whereby failed asylum seekers or refugees can return to their country of origin in a dignified and orderly manner. Our evaluation of this programme, run by the International Organisation of Migration with partners, involves research in Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Pakistan and the UK, interviewing up to 300 individuals and organisations.

2007-8 Home Office Evaluation of the Challenge Fund for Refugee Integration and the Purposeful Activities Fund for Asylum Seekers. The final year of these two funds (see below for a further description) required our team to visit, support and troubleshoot (where necessary) all 88 projects funded. The evaluation report informed our client of the performance of all the projects, provided evidence-based policy research, and assessed the extent to which policy intentions were realised.
Refugee Funding and Resettlement
2008 Bristol CAMHS Research into the mental health needs of young Somalis in Bristol Funded by the Department of Health, TRPL was the only company commissioned to work in the Community Engagement research programme. The work was completed over a year with Amana Educational Trust, University of Central Lancashire, partners across the region and employed a community researcher approach. The report highlights key issues in the mental health needs of young Somalis in Bristol. You can read the report on the mental health of young Somalis in Bristol here.
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
2006-7 Home Office Evaluation of the Challenge Fund for Refugee Integration and the Purposeful Activities Fund for Asylum Seekers. The Challenge Fund provided funding for organisations working to assist refugees integrate into UK society, whereas the Purposeful Activities fund provided for Asylum Seekers to be constructively engaged while awaiting a decision on their case. The evaluation took the form of visiting, evaluating, and supporting all 112 projects funded by the Home Office in this year to inform future policy decisions on refugee integration and asylum seeker projects.

2007 Dodoma AIDS Prevention and Control Association Behavioural Surveillance Survey (BSS) of In-School Youth BSS are standardised surveys undertaken to gather intelligence on HIV prevention. This survey of 683 randomly selected secondary school students in Dodoma (about 10% of the population under study) was completed in January 2007. An Executive Report of the findings of this behavioural surveillance survey of youth in Dodoma is availble.

2006 West Wilts CAB and Wiltshire REC Research on Migrant Workers in Wiltshire and Swindon. Jointly commissioned by Wilts Racial Equality Council and West Wiltshire CAB. Research to determine the location, needs and profile of migrant workers in Wiltshire. We processed all the available statistics on migrant workers in Wiltshire and interviewed 23 migrants to the county, ascertaining their knowledge of housing, employment, health systems, their social and community life, their experience of Wiltshire and their aspirations. This is the first major piece of research done on migrants to Wiltshire and found that many experienced major housing and employment problems. West Wiltshire Citizens Advice Bureau and Wilts Racial Equality Council
2006 Refugee Action Destitute Asylum Seekers. Database Design and Interrogation. Transparency Research was commissioned to manage the database and statistical analysis for this project. A team of researchers interviewed destitute asylum seekers in the UK. The challenges of this project was the co-ordination of the data entry, and analysis. We created a bespoke MySQL database with PHP front end for analysis. The database was available on-line to the research team to file their field reports, and it also processed data and conducts statistical analysis on demand. The database provided the tool for analysing the data and the final report is available from Refugee Action here
National charity working with refugees to help them build a new life in the UK.
2006 Somali Disabled and Elderly Association Disabled and Elderly Somalis in Bristol. Research. Examination of existing information, semi-structured interviewing in Somali and English. With extremely limited resources and an extremely limited timescale, we were able to interview 34 people and organistions within Bristol and gather valuable demographic information about the location, profile and needs of elderly and disabled Somalis in the City. The research proved the need for improved services catering to this group's particular needs. This report is available: Disabled and Elderly Somalis in Bristol.
A small grassroots community association promoting the needs and interests of disabled and elderly Somali's in Bristol.
2006 16 Plus Independent Living Services External Evaluation. Extensive management, employee and client evaluation. Semi-structured interviews. The report gave 16 Plus valuable information on a number of issues pertinent to their business, including developments in social care policy within local authorities, and areas of their business they needed to develop. 16 Plus has, as a result, modified and developed its practice and remains a leader in it's field. 16 Plus provides support services for young people leaving the care of the local authority.
2006 Refugee Council Compilation and Research.Refugees into Business. We produced two guides for this project, one to assist mainstream business advisers work with refugee community organistions, and another to help refugee community organistions give better business advice and work with the mainstream. The documents are available from Refugees Into Business. Refugee Council said: 'You did keep to deadlines which has not been my experience with a lot of well known consultancies'.

2006 Matrix Research and Consultancy Ltd Database Auditing System. We generated a database and querying structure that checked the British Transport Police crime data against defined legal rules for allocation. Matrix said: 'I appreciate your willingness to provide a good product and your responsiveness. I will certainly consider you again when we need additional database support in house.'

2006 Bristol City Council - EMAS EMAS Refugee and Asylum Seeker Team Evaluation. External evaluation, using semi-structured interviews and focus groups. We interviewed local education authority staff, teachers and head teachers, parents of pupils at Bristol schools and consulted with local community groups. The research showed that the service was widely respected but needed a great deal more resources to have considerable impact across the City.
The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service works within Bristol Local Education Authority and is a small team devoted to improving the achievement of minority ethnic children in the City.
2005 Refugee Housing Association Reducing Barriers for Refugees Accessing Choice Based Lettings Schemes. External Evaluation. Semi-structured interviews and survey of clients. The report provided evidence to funders of the impact and effectiveness of the CBLP and also provided timely management information in the provision of the service. RHA said: 'Overall the evaluation report was very detailed, it included the key aims and objectives identified in the brief and therefore met our need. The style of report is easy to read i.e. there is no jargons which should make it easy to translate should we want to do so in the future.' 2003 Kensington and Chelsea Social Services The Social Care of HIV-infected Heterosexuals in Kensington and Chelses. Research and Evaluation. Survey and semi-structured interviews. Kensington and Chelsea has a very high proportion of homosexuals clients, relatively little was known about the heterosexual population at the time. We interviewed and surveyed a wide range of individuals who were identified as clients of the Health Team. The review allowed the team to develop its services more appropriately for this group.
RBKC Health Team provides services to HIV-infected and affected adults and children in the Borough.
